Hand TIED EXTENSIONS AFTERCARE

Your Extensions. Your Investment.

Your hand tied extensions are custom crafted and color matched to blend with your natural hair for a seamless and elevated look. Proper care at home will protect the quality, longevity, and comfort of your extensions while preventing tangling, slipping, or damage to your natural hair.

Following these aftercare steps helps ensure your hair stays soft, smooth, and flawless every day.

BRUSHING

Remove knots and tangles daily, on dry hair, to prevent matting. Always brush starting from the ends first, working your way up into mid shafts and finally the roots. We've curated recommended combs and brushes.

WASHING

Use sulfate-free professional grade shampoo to gently cleanse and condition hair. Apply moisturizing conditioner from mid-lengths to ends while avoiding the root area to prevent beads from sliding. Explore our in salon favorites and stylist-approved shampoos.

DRYING

Rough dry hair 70–80% before going in with a brush, starting from the ends and working your way up. You can air dry extensions, however it is still recommended to dry the roots completely to avoid matting/tangling. Use heat-protecting products mid-lengths to ends and gently dry hair. Discover in salon favorites, signature selects for heat-protectants, and recommended hair dryers.

STYLING

PRODUCTS

Protect your investment! Always use professional grade products. At DÚO, our in salon favorites include Milbon and It’s A 10 heat protectant, chosen to support soft, healthy hair that lasts.

Apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week to both your natural hair and extensions to maintain hydration, shine, and a flawless finish.

SWIMMING

When swimming in saltwater or a pool, be conscious that your extensions can get easily dehydrated. Your extensions are more susceptible to drying out than your natural hair given that extensions have no way of repairing themselves because they don’t get sebum from your scalp like natural hair does.

Dehydrated hair is more prone to tangling, and without proper brushing it can mat or break. We strongly recommend keeping your extensions up and dry out of the water. We offer a variety of extension-safe hair ties and hair clips that protect your hair without pulling or causing tension.

That being said, we understand life happens! If you choose to swim with your extensions, before swimming, wet extensions with fresh/tap water and apply a leave-in conditioner through the mid-shaft and ends.

Gather hair into a loose pony, braid, or plaits. Once finished swimming, rinse hair with fresh water and lightly spray ends with a leave-in conditioner. Optional: Wear a hat to prevent sun exposure.

TANNING + SUN EXPOSURE

Use a zinc-oxide based sunscreen (mineral-based sunscreen) to ensure that hair does not turn a pink/orange hue. Supergoop! is a great option, as long as the sunscreen is not mineral-based, you can purchase any brand. This is especially important for blonde/medium brown.

Bronzing products have avobenzone in them which cause hair extensions to absorb into a pink/orange color.

SLEEPING

Always detangle strands and NEVER go to sleep with wet hair. Sleeping on wet strands causes hair to mat. To maintain soft and shiny extensions, sleep on a silk pillowcase or with a silk bonnet.

Braiding your extensions avoids tangling.

COLORING

Your extensions have been custom color matched (and in some instances toned) to give you optimal results. Tampering with existing color could result in a mismatch. Duo is not responsible for any mismatched color caused from box coloring or in another salon.

EXERCISING

Avoid high and tight ponytails as they pull on the roots of your extensions and can cause tension spots on your scalp. Low ponytails, braids, and space buns are recommended.

Our extension-safe hair ties and hair clips keep your hair protected and secure without any pulling or tension.

Another option is to wear a baseball cap and pull hair through the ponytail hole in the back.
